Strangler Figs

The Strangler Fig is a tall canopy, widely buttressed tree which grows to 45m in height. The top of this tree spreads like an umbrella. It features light coloured bark. In the rainforest the strangler fig germinates only in the branches of a host tree from the seed deposited by birds. Many roots are sent down and they gradually envelope and strangle the host tree leaving the fig in its place. There are five species of strangler fig represented in the Park.
Leaves:Leaves are simple, large, glossy green above and paler below. Commonly betwwen 4 and 7cm in length.
Flowers: The flowers are on the inside of the fruit and are pollinated by a wasp which enters the fruit through a small hole before the fleshy part of the fruit develops.
Fruit: Fruit is large (about 3cm with a nipple on the end) decorative and tasty which means that it is relished by birds. The fig is dark purple when ripe with yellowish dots, fleshy and ovular. They are a most important food tree for birds

Sydney Park/St Peters Brickworks and Paracyclotosaurus davidi…

and wtf?! thats what I thought…

The brickworks are well known (well not so well know since I did not know 🙂  ) in paleontology for the discovery of a full, intact skeleton of a Paracyclotosaurus davidi in 1910. The 2.75 metre labyrinthodonl Paracyclotosaurus davidi was a prehistoric amphibian and the only known species to have lived in Australia.

Apparently there was also Insects including blattoids (sounds like something outta starcraft 🙂 ), orthopteroids, and coleopterans

Sites of Enmore/Newtown

Well I have lived here so long and never taken a picture of the most famous site in Newtown – the ‘I have a Dream’ mural. I do regularly get and take pictures of some of the graf that is around, its amazing how often it changes, there is even a stencil art wall in Enmore which morphs and evolves on a regular basis..

Check out more graf here

Just wander on thru the back streets and you find a world of artwork (some may not classify it as so) that is everchanging…

and from the City of Sydney Site

Paula Hamilton and Paul Ashton who kindly gave permission to reproduce the following extract from their article in Public History Review Vol. 9, pp23-36 (see especially pp30-32)

Another memorial in the Inner Western suburb of Newtown is painted on a wall. It is at the less salubrious

end of the area on a main traffic thoroughfare in one of the most congested streets in the city. Adorning a whole wall in bold colours, it is impossible to miss. It bears the classic realism of the spraycan artist. There are two images: the Earth, and the face of Martin Luther King, both stark against a black background.

Underneath are the words ‘I have a dream’. Across the bottom third of the wall is the Aboriginal flag and the injunction: ‘Please show respect, post no bills here.’ But despite this mural’s visual accessibility and prominence it is often viewed ‘in a state of distraction’-as opposed, for example, to the intense focus when in a museum- because it is part of the public streetscape of buildings, shops, people and cars. It is arresting, but becomes part of the urban visual wallpaper. Memories embedded in buildings like this one acquire meanings different from those the architect intended, and the mural obscures any sense of the three storey building underneath it.

Concrete Engineering (Well ok… its a Slab)

DIY Project – 12 hours of Pain!

dsc_3202.JPG36 Bags of premix concrete! Mixed in a wheelbarrow by hand! At 2 bags

per wheelbarrow mix at about 10 mins per mix and pour (this went to
about 20 mins towards the end!), do that maths and thats alot of hand
mixing, brings new meaning to RSI.

To make things worse, it was sunny all day long and then suddenly at
about bag 20 it started to rain! Out came the makeshift tent and carried
on. started at 9am, finished at 9pm. All things considered I reckon its
not a bad finish and not bad for my first concrete slab!

Most important lesson learnt? hire a cement mixer!

Sea of Hands Statement: Respect, Negotiation and Coexistence

“I believe that genuine Reconciliation can only be achieved by seeking agreement between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians about its outcomes. This will require genuine, good faith negotiations between Indigenous Australians and the Federal Government to achieve reforms that recognise and protect the rights of Indigenous Australians, including native title rights recognised in the High Court Mabo and Wik decisions.

Negotiations will strengthen a sense of national unity, reduce conflict and increase certainty – benefits which can only be obtained by respecting the legitimate rights of Indigenous Australians. Negotiation is fundamental to coexistence and the achievement of Reconciliation for our country.”

What Camera to Buy???

After having my beloved Sony DSC-V1 stolen from my car..(assholes) the decision must be made …what camera to get to replce it….the obvious and favoured choice is the next camera in the series..the SONY DSC-V3, excellent revies…only one downer with it is the auto ISO setting during the P mode….has the tendency to dive higher ISo valuse during bright lights….reduces the quality…apprently tho u just need to watch the ISo and it is great….

The only other camera I was seriously looking at was the Canon EOS 350D, this cammera is in a totally different league tho…this is SLR whereas the sony is more compact which is what i am looking for…

nice review here http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/dsc_v3-review/

also the other golden site www.dpreview.com

will probably go the sony….the first V1 served me well….and all the obvious issues i had with it have been corrected…
