Softeness is

Campcove
From a recent sunset session with +Rodney Campbell , i had set up on the beach only to find the ever increasing waves encroaching on my position (that would be those darn ferries), this was the third attempt and finally got a result that did not have from the sand disappearing from underneath 🙂

Float on

Even if things get heavy we'll all float on alright

I dared not step out further to isolate that little levitating rock for risk of 1) getting wet 2) sliding on my arse on sharp rocks 🙂

One Chance

Continuing on theme of midday seascapes and long exposures! I was perched up on the headland (seen in the top left of the image) watching a paraglider glide on the updrafts from the old quarry cliffs, he certinaly had more balls than me! There was not that much breeze about and it reminded me of those fake skydiving rigs you can go on, you know,.. the ones where you get in a vertical wind tunnel and balance on the updraft only to roll off it and come crashing down… – anyway he did no crash downt, which was good 🙂
However, back to the original point, as I was up there watching him, I spied this thumping great big log..no, more correctly..a complete tree, roots and all washed up on the beach, i thought 'there's no way I was gonna leave that un-photographed' 🙂 I was however running on borrowed time hence I made the decision to take a single shot, no second chances, one shot, forcing myself to actually stop and think about the shot (which i rarely do 🙂 ), plus it took me 15 minutes to get to the darn thing.
So, the result, I could not get the whole tree in it was that big, hence I ran with misty leading lines of the main trunk, partially buried by the sand.

Turbulent inrush

This is the ocean saying to Gerry, ''dance skinny white boy or your gonna get wet ' 🙂

……… and i danced..and still got wet, might need to improve the dance skillz methinks.

Shelf Life

burning time

Carrying on the theme of midday seascapes and attempting to shoot something half decent when all the light is well.. just flat and pretty wrong, this was a quick long exposure while trying to un-snag my fishing rod…. again, by the way I caught absolutely zilch, methinks fishign and photography kinda go together, you have to do them at ridiculous times of the day to nail one 🙂

The chaps out there fishing where kind enough to hang five while the 3 minute exposure finished off, there was some post work to sharpen them up a bit since there was some blur there, however all in all it was ok.

I really loved the green stuff in the foreground but wanted to get close to use that line of the rock to lead my image right up to the fisherman, however in the interest of safety and not needing to get wet, I elected to include the green slippery stuff for my foreground. If there was a stick out there to hang off, +Kitten KaboodleInc i would have done it 🙂

Ghosts in Heaven

RIP for the Rock fisherman who lost his life at North Curl Curl over the weekend.

After a interesting discussion on +Dylan Toh post regarding heavy ND filters, I thought I would get my B+W filter out again which has been very infrequently used since buying the LEE slide in option.

I really love the warm (i would say natural) tones this filters gives in comparison to the LEE bigstopper.

The colourful knob

In hindsight, I think a selfie with me out on the… rocky outcropping.. would have made for a cool shot, oh well, next time 🙂

But how neat are all these colours on the rock, from warm golds to fresh greens, top stuff nature, nicely done there and I'll be back for more 🙂

A nice little outcropping on the 'Little Gibber' – a strangely knob shaped out cropping in the otherwise bare smooth beach line..

Windswept tones

When you feel like you're out there on your own, know there is someone watching over you, When out at sea, feels love can let go
Oh sailor, we will blow the wind right

Damn I wish I could write like that 🙂 anway, they are not my words, but the part thereof the lyrics to a 2013 song by Mr Little Jeans, how cool is that band name by the way! 🙂 the song name is "Oh Sailor"

Those words to seemed to fit the image and as such here I find myself.

View this baby in full resolution goodness and feel the wave of clouds as the city envelopes the last of the warm sunlight rays.

Golden Dilemma

stay wide? crop? remove left headland? remove right headland? way too many choices, hence picked a middle ground.. literally 🙂

McMahon Serenity

Just a sneaky little long exposure while at Maroubra, this one was 3 exposures taken each at 238seconds and merged into a panorama, I really wanted the bigstopper filter to remove the ocean craziness and leave me with that beautiful rocky coast line, whic h it has to an extent and even the little old fisheramn was kind enough to hang 5 for a few minutes 🙂

This was a super low tide and barely any swell, the rocks you can see in the centre of the frame are usually being smashed by each wave set.

Zenith Beach

It was certainly a bit of a struggle this morning, harsh dynamic range in the light and a significant lack of clouds, I can usually deal with this but the light did not even develop any nice pastels 🙁 anyway, enough whinging 🙂 the saving grace was the location!

Camp

We have all seen it, most togs have been here at one stage or another and today… +Rodney Campbell and I went there 😉

First shot off the rank, just as the sun disappeared over Manly or somewhere thereabouts!
Standy by for the triptych, 3 images of this little shed looks much better than one 🙂

Anyone know what the hell this shed is actually used for? sewerage pump ? nav station, shark net storage, drug running? 😉

Rodneys Log

(don't take that outta context)

After spending half the morning rearranging the driftwood on the southern end of Newport beach for +Rodney Campbell , we finally had a log in the water with some level of decency about it (the previous attempt only got another larger log halfway to the water;) )

Even with the foreground interest , it was a real struggle to capture something worthwhile, the colours where pretty bland and it was one of those sunrises with a band of cloud across the horizon but not blocking alot of light – hence leaving a really high dynamic range scene (even with grad filters).

This image was composed with the warm sun (with alittle accentuation) to the right away from the bright part of the morning and of course with the ever moving 'rod's log', which shortly thereafter departed this position bound for better things

Holy softness and the stick of death

welcome to the cotton-wool ball

I will be back for you little stick out in the ocean, i'll be back for my selfie 🙂 and its gonna be epic (unless i get washed off, then not so epic, just tragic 🙂 ) I need soem pole dancing moves, anyone know any good pole dancers that could give me some tips 😉

Spiral vs Spiral

The natural vs the unatural
The old steelwool is getting pretty cliche nowadays, however its still fun to bring it out to jazz up a landscape. It was only a afterthought to bring along the gear and pack a ciggy lighter, which by the way really should have gotten lost, that darn thing with the safety lock means you could not burn down a gas station, i think i wore off all my skin on my thumb just trying to get a freakin' spark.

Well there was no chance of burning nuttin' down out there, with the recent rain, like 1 hour before hand and teh well.. serious lack of fuel the only thing burning was my thumb.
Although, if +Rodney Campbell had his way i reckon he woulda burnt the tree down 😉
Anyway, enough whingeing, here ya have it, the spiraling galaxy vs the spiraling of three nutters out on a freezing winters night in the middle of some sandy sand dunes.

Single frame – +Gerard Blacklock on da wool, +Rodney Campbell on the colours and +Suren J on the white fill.
Exif/setup data:
D7000 coupled with a sand filled Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 @11mm Aperture: f/6.7 and Shutter Speed: 376.8s
out front – nada, yep nothing
to the left and right was Suren and in the tree was Rod.

btw +Rodney Campbell this would have been a perfect place for star trails – the centre of rootation is in the perfect spot in this frame..

oh well, have to go back now 🙂
