Overland Track 2026-Day 3 (Part 1)

Windemere to Pelion Hut, the longest day, the best day.

This day had absolutely fantastic light and scenery that could have kept me here for days 🙂 However I did have to pace myself, 17km and so much scenery and limited battery supplies meant I tried to conserve, however failed miserably, ended up with over 200 shots (culled and edited).

On a side note, I did wonder how the battery situation would go, using a mirrorless camera means the number of shots per charge is pretty limiting, I reckon if I was using my older DSLR (nikon D750) it would have done the whole trip in 2 batteries. I did end up taking a total of 4 camera batteries with the option of doing an emergency charge from from my powerbank (10K). This powerbank had to also keep the garmin inreach and the phone going. I did charge my phone once and the garmin inreach 1.5 times and still had a quarter left on the power bank. I did get into my last camera battery, but it was pretty well full when finishing. I think if I had bigger (photographically speaking) 1st and 2nd days then i could have hit my battery limit.

I also cranked out the tripod (Leofoto Mr.Y for those interested) for the first time this day, there was this really speccy little waterfall which just had to be photographed, its a big deal to get the pack off get the tripod off and use it, each time it probably burns about 10 minutes so I could not be doing that all day long.

I did not plan to shoot any particular style or format, to be honest most of the planning effort was on the essential stuff rather than researching the best spots of the type of scenery, in anycase, I ended up shooting alot of pano shots, alot of scenes lent themselves very well to this, but also, for me, its actually a very easy format to shoot, little thought required and compositionally it can be more forgiving than the standard 4:3 or vertical format.

The walk between Windemere and Pelion is probably my favourite for the whole trip, the diversity in landscape is incredible and it does not get boring, you are in and out of shrub, wet mossy forest and open grass plains and big vistas. The forested section where just amazing and with the wet the foliage just came alive. If you are wondering, all the shots are taken using a polariser, this also helps remove reflections and really lets the colours shine through, its one filter that no amount of post processing can replicate.

Another really cool thing about this day and the track is the fact that often you can see the path and others way up ahead giving you a sense of where you are going and also (for good or bad) how far you have to go. By about the halfway point you can actually see Pelion hut as a tiny little rectangle in the field, at the time I was not sure, but looking back on the images its pretty clear…

The rain you may be thinking? well it did sprinkle a bit earlier on but after that it was just lots of clouds moving at pace which resulted in great soft light conditions for speecy forest scenes and big skies.

Here is my highlights (there is alot) from day 3, this is part one since there is so many 🙂
