Almost Silent Cocytus

I have to say, I have had it up to teh neck with shit 20mm fans, I have had three in this box, all of which have seized and stop, not that its super critical from a cooling point of view, but nonetheless, three different branded 120mm fans locked up in a relatively dust free environment, also its not like there are being switched on and off all the time, they just about just sit there running 24hrs a day…The first one was a Zalman, not particularly quiet either, but cheap, the second was some non-descript number an dthe third a coolmaster one, which seized after only 3 or 4 months I did not even notice it had stopped until I checked the temperature logs…

Nonetheless, it now has a Artic Cooling one in there, which is pretty quiet, so that sorts out the exhaust fan, however the CPU cooler is a tired old Arkua Socket A CPU cooler Arkua7228 , great heatsink, but the fan is built for performance rather than quietness, so it was off with that bad boy and on with a 80mm fan adapter and a old/new nexus 80mm fan – the space was a bit of a issue but it is a multi-processor machine so I just moved to teh other socket position – I don’t think my gateway/firewall really needs to be a dual processor number 🙂

Now, cocytus is suspend high above all, literally and running very quite with the most noise coming from the harddrive!

Mental note, buy up big on the dirt cheap socket 370 coolers from eyo soon, damn cheap and great for us oldies running ancient systems..

Upgrading Etch

Before Upgrade

Take a complete backup of your debian etch server

Procedure to follow

First you need to take a backup of your sources.list file using the following command

#cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.backup

Now edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file

#vi /etc/apt/sources.list

Now you need to replace “etch” with “lenny“.

deb http://ftp.gb.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.gb.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free

after replacing etch with lenny the file will look like this

The above example is for  a system using the main UK mirrors; your file might use a different local one

WARNING: if for some reason your apt sources doesn’t use etch, but “stable” then your apt commands will start to use lenny the moment it is released. This can result in wrongfully performing the upgrade while you don’t want to do this or even upgrade by mistake.We would always recommend people to use the release name (like etch, lenny) instead of generic names (like stable, testing); this way you will have the control on when you want to upgrade.

Perform upgrade

After changing apt sources we need to update source list using the following command

#aptitude update

Once this is done we will want to upgrade first the core apt packages

#aptitude install apt dpkg aptitude

and finally perform the full upgrade

#aptitude full-upgrade

Note:-dist-upgrade was renamed to full-upgrade in lenny’s aptitude; or you can use:apt-get dist-upgrade

This will take a while depending on what packages you have installed (that will need to be upgraded) and on your internet connection speed. After this is done you will have to reboot your system in order to activate the kernel upgrade to the lenny 2.6.26 kernel. Also you will want to check and see that all the applications you are using are still working as expected after the upgrade.

Maroubra Sunrise

What a morning, clouds were wonderful, light was nice and even, so many potential compositions, I could have taken twice as many shots as I did…! Sunrise is at such a decent hour in the winter months…makes for getting up much easier and less of a babbling mess 🙂

Maroubra’s development began post 1910. During the giddy 1920s the beach boardwalk was constructed and the suburb gained the Maroubra Beach Hotel on Marine Parade. Still rather inaccessible, Maroubra developed when a direct tram service was introduced in 1919 with a weekday peak hour service from Central Railway to Maroubra Beach Road. Although sparsely settled by 1920 Maroubra offered home builders electricity, ‘the wonder fuel of the twenties, very modern and very smart’, as well as water and gas. A big attraction in the 1920s was the Maroubra Speedway. Car racing in Maroubra ended in 1928 but it was used as a motorcycle track until 1934. The Coral Sea Park Estate was established on the site. In the 1930s liver coloured, brick, semi-detached houses were built for rental. The 1940s saw rows of home units and by the 1970s Crown land on the heights was released for home building.

Well kind of, up and running again, a few key points to remember for the future, to ensure this installs smoothly verify the following:

1) Apache mod_rewrite is installed

2) Correct Directive exists in the apache conf.

<Directory /home/
AllowOverride All
</Directory>

3) The .htaccess file is in place and correctly edited.

Note the software can run without the mod_rewrite but its get fugly, merely changing an option in the config.php sorts it out.

Bundjalung and the Evans River

The Evans Head region is generally accepted as being an area of significant cultural and historical heritage for Aboriginal people. It is evident that the entire region, stretching North to Ballina, West to Casino and South to Iluka was an important gathering place for the Bundjalung people. The Goanna Headland and its surrounds is a significant site, being the subject of complex series of spiritual/creation stories located on the upper north coast and therefore of spiritual significance for the local Bundjalung descendants.

The Bundjalung people used to hunt, fish and gather shellfish from the river estuary and also utilised the diversity of plant foods available. Shell middens and flaked stone artifacts have been recorded and studied in the area reflecting the high use intensity.

Traditional knowledge indicates that the Evans Head area is also significant due to previous use as a ceremonial ground and for collection of orche from Red Hill. An 1840s massacre site is also located within the locality. The locality was used as a camping and holiday ground for Bundjalung descendants until the 1960s.

The Model 17’s unusual negative stagger wing configuration (the upper wing staggered behind the lower) and unique shape maximized pilot visibility while minimizing the tendency to stall. The fabric-covered fuselage  was faired with wood formers and stringers  over a welded, steel tube frame. Construction was complex and took many man-hours to complete. The Staggerwing’s retractable conventional landing gear, uncommon at that time, combined with streamlining, light weight, and powerful radial engines helped it perform significantly better than other biplane designs.

In the mid-1930s, Beech began a major redesign of the aircraft, to create the Model D17 Staggerwing. The D17 featured a lengthened fuselage that improved the aircraft’s landing characteristics by increasing the leverage generated by the elevator. They relocated the Ailerons to the upper wings, eliminating any interference with the air flow over the flaps. Braking was improved with a foot-operated brake synchronized to the rudder pedals. These modifications enhanced the Staggerwing’s performance, which was soon put to the test under wartime conditions.

Dehavilland Chipmunk

The Chipmunk was designed to succeed the de Havilland Tiger Moth biplane trainer that was widely used during the Second World War. Wsiewolod Jakimiuk, a Polish prewar engineer, created the first indigenous design of the aircraft at de Havilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd. It is an all-metal, low wing, tandem two-place, single engine aircraft with a conventional tail wheel landing gear and fabric-covered control surfaces. The wing is also fabric-covered aft of the spar. A clear perspex canopy covers the pilot/student (front) and instructor/passenger (rear) positions. CF-DIO-X, the Chipmunk prototype, flew for the first time at Downsview, Toronto on 22 May 1946 with Pat Fillingham, test pilot from the parent de Havilland company, at the controls[1]. The production version of the airplane was powered by a 145 hp (108 kW) in-line de Havilland Gipsy Major 8 engine while the prototype was powered by a 145 hp (108 kW) de Havilland Gipsy Major 1C.
